I am giving this product a zero star rating because that is what it is worth. Novatel Wireless U998 Turbo Stick will initially work for about 7 minutes, then once it 'warms up' will only stay connected for about 1 minute or less at a time (sometimes only seconds). Very frustrating. Called Virgin Mobile ... told to do this, do that, someone will get back to you, blah blah blah, until warranty expired. I actually bought a second one ... same issues. This week I got fedup and moved to a new provider. 24 hours later and I'm a happy happy camper.

This product is bordering on FRAUD.

Bad Bell, Bad Turbo Stick

Reviewed on Monday October 15, 2012 by , Rideau Ferry, On
First Turbo Stick lasted 5 minutes. Sent it back and received new one. After two months received bill for $130 of internet that I did not use. Soon calls from Bell, collection agency, threatening letters from Bell VP and collection agency. Turned out someone at Bell was using "dead" original Turbo Stick I sent back.
12 phone calls to Bell, latest updates and still the second 998 continues to cut out, shows "No Device." The local Smiths Falls Bell outlet says it works fine when they use it. They ask me if there are trees around my house. Other cell phone work here.
Bottom Line-don't buy this product!

Piece of Garbage

Reviewed on Sunday August 19, 2012 by , Brighton
The bell turbo stick is a piece of garbage. This is my second one. The first one didn't work from the get go and had trouble replacing it. this one works intermittently. I can be on for 1 hour and then I lose service(acquiring data service) or I can be for 5 minutes and the same thing happens. I have to reboot everytime to get the service back. Bell should be ashamed to have their name associated with something so inferior. Using this is slower then my dial-up was.
If I didn't have a contract, I would be rid of it.

We have had the Turbo U998 SAtick for 2.5 years ,and the bills just keep getting bigger and bigger .The charges went from 35 dollars/mth to 120/mth now tthere is something really wrong when our supposed usage jumps that high. I tried to settle this matter with Bell and they kept blowing us off.We never got any action until we contacted the CRTC and filed a formal complaint. Now they are trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the CRTC but that wont happen. We are still waiting for a resoulotion and hopefully that will happen in the next 3 weeks or so. I will update everyone on what happens. If a class action is necessary ,I say go for it, I will back it up and support the people involved. Our contract is up soon and we will never use any of Bells products again. I even switched my dish for our television to another company. So it not only scews up their internet scam but they lost ours and others TV business as well.

Based on the reviews, I must be one of the dozen or so people that got a working model... I've had excellent performance from my U998. With a minor tweak, it also works well with Linux (Ubuntu and Mint 12 confirmed).
It also works well when used with the Dlink DIR412 router.
No billing issues, no surprises. Like cellular plans, you may get dinged Roaming, but I was told about that. (Free internet would be cool though...)

Stick, stuck it to me

Reviewed on Saturday June 23, 2012 by , Creston
Well I too, had problems with the original stick, got a replacement and it works - mechanically that is. That is to say, it connects and holds the connection. my problem was the update for the software took days to install correctly. I do not believe that it accurately records the download totals. Suddenly I got a 500 bill for usage. I called Bell who told me I had used 8 GB of data, then when I pointed out that under my plan the maximum charge should have been 100 - they immediately revised that figure to 16 GB. If you have a similar problem ask to speak to customer retention - they adjusted the bill. I'm thinking the new software for the stick is faulty - I don't believe anyone could download 16 GB over three days with the throughput of the stick.

Reviewed on Saturday January 14, 2012 by , Armstrong BC
I kept having my internet service suddenly quit. I called the bell support and was told I needed to upgrade to the 4.4 update to get the stick to work with my new windows7 program. I've tried repeatedly to install this update and it never completes. Now I see a warning that I'll be charged for this upgrade. It never has completed application! And I've let it sit and try for over an hour! It simply won't install and now I'm going to have to pay for it???? So now i"m still stuck with the internet suddenly stopping. Frustrated and feeling ripped off and victimized. Don't believe the support person if they tell you that you need this upgrade. I think it's a scam for them to charge you a big fee. I never would have bought this type of stick if I'd known this, but on the other hand, it's either this, or slow dial up?!?!!? Like someone else said, the rural user that can only use dial up or satellite gets ripped off.

Works Fine

Reviewed on Monday January 2, 2012 by , Guelph, On
Geez, are we the only ones in the world that haven't had problems with the U998? We upgraded from the old Turbo Stick in August with no change in monthly fee (there was a onetime admin fee for the upgrade) and the new stick has worked far better than the old one. We had had lots of problems with the old stick (drop off's and slow speed of course) and a hard time getting that one going originally. Turns out that most of our problems at initial start-up were with settings within our computer and with anti-virus and firewall programs. I wonder it that is the problem people are having with the new U998 now. We have virtually no disconnects now and the service of the new stick overall has been far superior when compared to the old one. We always have 3 bars of signal strength and the speed is fast enough for the type of stuff we do. The 1 gig monthly limit of the basic plan is a bit tight for the limited online stuff we do online though. I would recommend a Tubo Hub for those who have multiple devices or require more Gbit capacity. Unfortunately, I imagine that it will be difficult to get Bell to upgrade to the Turbo hub without incurring a fee and monthly rate increase...and of course the hub isn't very mobile.

Then yesterday I called Bell out of frustration (Christmas Eve) and the teckie was nice and we uploaded new software and a file to upload new firmware. This takes about and hour (stupid) and I said I would let him go........then on the third step it crapped out again. Tried numerous times; doesn't upgrade. I have been paying $ 46 / month for nothing.
This amounts to fraud as far as im concerned.

Steer clear of this turbo stick!

I bought my turbo stick in Nov. 2010 and almost immediately it started overheating and losing connection and the problem got progressively worse until, by Feb. 2011, I could not use the device. I could not get help from Bell so I quit paying on my contract...then they started phoning me. In Aug. I told them I was stuck w/ a useless turbo stick and owing $ on a service I can't even use. I agreed to bring my contract up-to-date after they promised to exchange my turbo stick. I've held up my end of the agreement, even paying ahead but I still have the bad turbo stick. Each time I call they tell me to call back when I have the turbo stick in my hand or when their computer system is up and running. Then they have the nerve to tell me to call back tomorrow - I must have this thing dealt with by Nov. 8 or my warranty expires. I almost lost it! Are you crazy? they're the ones causing the delays and they tell me I could lose out because of that? NEVER, EVER will I go w/ Bell again.

Bell Turbostick

I wrote a 1 star review of Turbostick on 16 Aug 2011. At that time I was locked in an endless struggle with Bell over all the various problems outlined by other reviewers. On one call to the tech department, I pointed out the existence of this review site to the techie and indicated that there was a large and very unhappy group of customers out there. He seemed genuinely surprised at the amount of dissatisfaction and the the intensity of the anger. He agreed that this could only be bad for Bell's reputation and thus bad for business. A day later, I was informed by Bell that the bugs in the latest firmware update had been corrected and that my service should be working well now. Surprisingly, it does work well. I use a cell phone amplifier to boost signal strength and with this I get 3 - 4 bars of strength. With this signal strength, the service is reasonably fast, I have never had a dropped connection in several months and while there are occasional slowdowns at peak periods, they are not anywhere near what they were before. I've upgraded my review, but only to 2 stars, because I still have issues with the usage fees which are ridiculous. Also, the skeptic in me suspects that Bell has the ability to tweak the performance of individuals if they choose to, which is hardly reassuring.

Bell Wimax has been the closest option to high speed that rural communities have had. Wimax subscribers are now being issued notice that effective June 2012 Wimax service will no longer be offered and instead people will have to switch to this stick. Do not buy into this....people need to get on the horn to their members of parliament as well as the CRTC and complain. Check your current usage with Bell Wimax and then find out how much your current usage will cost with this stick. The average high speed internet company charges 60/mnth for up to 60 gigs of usage.....that same usage will cost you 500/mnth with this stick. This is unacceptable.....people need to file a class action to ask bell to keep Mimax service going and stop this cash grab.

Nobody should pay to get out of a contract when the other party is not living up to their end of the agreement. So, go back and re-read this, then call Bell and follow my directions. My current (and no cost) turbo hub gives perfect service in a rural area for $35 a month with 3 Gigs of usage. The sole issue is that heavy traffic on their system occasionally slows it down (evenings with many users online). I'm giving a 5 star rating here for two reasons; to draw your attention to this letter, and to allot a true rating to the Netgear MBR1210 Turbo Hub

All the problems already ranted about. I will get a replacement and then will expect to find the replacement doesn't work either then I will commence cancellation of the 'contract' which Bell did not live up to considering they did not provide hardly any internet service. I may have gotten a few megs of internet, but not much more than that. U998D is a great product, its McAfee that SUCKS!

Reviewed on Wednesday August 10, 2011 by , Mount Forest, Ontario
I had all the problems that most everyone else had, and then some! The U998D was BRILLIANT for the first 10 months or so, faster than Rogers hi-speed! Then, it sloooowed down, I started getting the time outs, the HTTP 500's, the Error 404's, until the unit finally couldn't load any pages and was down to about 1kb/s! Called Bell customer non-support, got 2 used Turbosticks, the warranty is only 1 yr. so it was up (yet my contract is for 3 yrs.!), another U998 and a U547 that I can't install due to an "Error 2738 VBScript run time" error.
Sound familiar?
Problem is that I use an Acer laptop piece-O-junk compooter, pre-loaded with McAfee VIRUS (not ANTI!!!) software! IT IS THE PROBLEM!!! You can't merely uninstall this JUNK program from your Control Panel with a mere "Uninstall" command! Nooooo! McAfee is a stubborn programme, and it imbeds itself DEEPLY into the Windows 7 64-bit O/S and messes with the critical .dll files.
In plainer english, the "residue" of McAfee's poisonous anti-virus VIRUS software messes with your computer's ability to install certain types of hardware (particularly Turbosticks & Modems, but it may also mess up Quicktime, Hotmail, iTunes...), and it generally causes the Windows 7 OS to slooooow down and run extremely poorly!
You have to go to the McAfee site and download a special uninstall exe. program/patch utility (MCPR.exe.)!
Download this file and your U998 problems will be OVER!

You could use it before 9 in the morning, but after that you get no signal. I used it another time in New Brunswick and I picked up the signal fine. I might of used it about maybe 4 hours in total for the month and they charged me my 35 dollars a month plus another 25 dollars for using 1.4 KB. that is a total of 60 dollars for a piece of crap that dont work properly and they suck you in for more money. It dont even allow you to check on how much MB you use.I see on the BELL web site it says for 30 dollars you get 500MB... Why was I charged 35 dollars.. I hear the Rogers stick prompts you as to how much you have used..I think I will give Rogers a try and see if that works better..

Reviewed on Monday July 18, 2011 by , Canada
Right from a Bell Tech... "Random Disconnects are a known issue"... So, my question is this: "Just b/c it's Novatel, they need to get on Novatel's case in order to get them to recall it!" By associating themselves with this "known issue", Bell's name & PR are both suffering - so Bell needs to be proactive in this regard. They can't pass the buck, nor should they be passing this piece of crap on to anyone.

Secondly... like everyone else, it would drop connection at the same time. I even got a replacement and downloaded, installed, uninstalled and re-installed, as per their instructions -- nothing works. I went back to my U727, which I'd had for the past 2 yrs -- when, btw, I never called them as much in those 2 yrs, as I did in one month ripping my hair out w/ the U998! aarrgghhh....

Thirdly, now they have me for a 2 yr contract, for a device I am no longer using -- and I was 'free' for the past year of any contracts...

They also promised a $75 credit w/ a coupon, which I still have yet to see applied to any bill -- and I've had 2 already.

I used to be a happy Bell customer. However...

Have had turbo stick for 18 monthd and I,ve always gotten a weak signal. The first couple months I was charged about $90.00 a month because they said I had went over my mgs. Complained but to no avail. So I upgraded to 3 gb which is $65.00 a month. Never did anything different on my computer but now I hardly use even one gb.For the last 6 months I have trouble staying connected and getting connected and have talked to many technicians wh all have a different answer. New sim card and have to upgrade the U998 stick which I did and that cost me $50.00 and it is no better. This is just a bunch of c***. When my contract runs out there will be no more Bell.

Peak time speed reduction

Reviewed on Tuesday July 5, 2011 by , Belleville Ontario
The U998 turbo stick is very slow durring the day and evening. It only reaches a satisfactory speed when most people are sleeping. Bell support staff will try to convince you that you computer is causing the slow speed. Before you spend hours re-installing your software or wasting money upgrading your stick try connecting at 3:00 am and if you find that the speed is fast enough, the problem is not your computer. Bell Mobility has sold or leased more turbo sticks than they have capacity to handle. Durring the day and evening their wireless network is unable to keep up with the volume of wireless internet traffic. You (by contract) will have to pay for an internet "SERVICE" that is very slow even if you refuse to use it.

I called Bell on several occasions and was advised that I needed to do an upgrade, then a new sim card none of which solved the problem. I asked and received a replacement U998 which arrived today and I still have the problem. The problem can be remedied by unplugging the device and plugging it back in, which would be fine if the research station was manned. I'm running the device from Windows XP and I've ensured that the drivers and firmware are up to date. I may need to install a relay or transistor on the power line of the usb cable so I can power cycle the device every time it flakes out.

Also, don't even dream of running this device on Linux.

Cell Phone Booster and Turbo Stick U998

We use a cell phone booster and a turbo stick at our cottage north of the Sault. The older version of the Turbo Stick worked just great. Then an upgrade was available. Should have stayed with the older version as it worked fine. The new stick is much slower and difficult to connect. Takes 3-4 tries. Signal gets dropped quickly. Very frustrating with internet and email. Cell phones work great and no conflict with the turbo stick. New cell tower being installed this summer so will be interesting to see if turbo stick is impacted at all. Booster should no longer be required at that time. I was told by Bell store that there is conflict with software for the U998 and certain Windows programs and that a download is available on the Bell website. I downloaded last night but haven't seen any real results yets. Connected 4X to the turbo stick and it worked 3 out of 4 on the first try but still slow initializing. Didn't stay connected to see if signal dropped. Not using the booster here at home so no weak signal issues.

I have been disappointed with the stick since I plugged it in over a year ago but now have no choice because if I want to break the contract it's over $400 dollars! It is so frustrating and such a rip off. As soon as 18 months pass I am breaking the contract and just paying the penalty.

For those of you wondering I had to get Rogers internet which I am using right now, which at least works and has good speed when I need it. (I don't work for Rogers, I actually think both Rogers and Bell rip us off with their very expensive rates!)

I have had the internet stick for about 11 months and have had problems from day one. I kept getting told to update the software, move to a better location, try again, try again, try again.

The stick would work for 15 minutes then disconnect and then work for 5 minutes at a time.

I would call for help often and be told that I should try for about a month and call again if the problem persists. Then I would get the same advice.

I don't have a lot of time to sit at a store waiting for the 1 person out of 5 that is the tech person. (Well he is the one who "knows" about these things. He doesn't have any training in tech support work)

When I did finally go to the store I waited about an hour for the one "tech" person to be free and then I sat with him for 3 hours while he confirmed that what I said was happening.

I was given a replacement stick with a new sim card and had the same exact problem.

We had a tragedy in our family so months went by between the time I went to the store and now.

Now I'm being told to sit and wait for the "tech" person and then let him spend 3 hours confirming that I'm not lying. Then they might give me a different stick or just tell me to try some different stuff and come back in a month.

Why can't they just give me a different stick (different model and company)?

My other option is that I can call the internet stick hotline and sit on the phone and computer for 3 hours to confirm I'm not lying. I bet I'll get the same run around.

I have updated the software and done everything that is on the bell website.

I hate when I'm getting ripped off and I'm told I'm the problem.

Does anyone have a solution or is there a bunch of people at bell laughing at how many people they can rip off before we just give up and pay until our contract ends?

I don't even want to give this product one star but it's the lowest I'm given.

The previous stick worked fine with this router. I tried another router, a Zoom mobile broadband Wireless - N router and likewise have the same result.
Mobile Connect displays the message "CTR-1e5 is connected" but the task bar advises "CTR-1e5 No Internet Access" This is the same messaging I see if I attempt to use the Zoom router.
I sent a note to Bell but based on what I have read here I am not planning on hearing from them in this life time. I think I'll go back to the store in Lindsay and return the U998 and go back to using my old turbo.

But, since November I have taken pictures of everything THEY have put me thru. ‘Lost connection.’ ‘Unable to connect to the internet. ‘ ‘Service is unavailable’ S L O W & so on. They have the nerve to confirm that we have to pay every time we have to start over. And, it’s their fault.
So with a couple of hundred pictures being sent to the CRTC and a duplicate package being send to Bell’s Head office maybe we can get better service or our money back. As far as I’m concerned we are all living in the same country and we all deserve proper service.
By the way, they tell me that we are only 1.5 km away from their tower and we still get rotten service, so there goes that theory!

The fix for me was to go back to my U760 CDMA device. The speeds on the CDMA network are still pretty decent and customer service was able to change the device in <10 mins. When I orignally called the technical department, They said they would call me back the next day, which in their defence they did, but because I didn't pick up the updated sim card due to the lack of acknowledgment at the store, I told them they would have to call back the next day. I waited, they didn't. The next day they called and left a message for me to call them. I deleted the message in error and didn't write down the number. I chatted online tonight and what do they do? Tell me to call a number during business hours..! I told the person I was chatting with that the customer service is unacceptable and she immediately signed off chat and it didn't give me the option to email the chat session. So lets see if I got this right..., I have to take time away from my business to get Bell to fix a problem with a service I am paying them for. Thank God we have a back up telus stick or I wouldn't be able to leave this message. We got the Bell stick in Jan 2010. It worked great until August. Then it didn't. We have a business and we're very busy, so by time I had time to look into it, it wasnt until Sept or Oct.. Anyhow, I downloaded the updated file. Thought maybe I did it wrong, tried again. Nope. Then I called the number, got a live person to help, and was told to just go into the store and get an updated sim, mine expired. I show up at a bell store on a Sunday, the two people working wouldn't acknowledge my existence. One young salesperson was with a customer, the other one who was behind the kiosk 5 feet from me, looked up from his computer, made eye contact with me, then looked back at his computer. No hello, no be right with you, NOTHING. I waited 5 minutes, then left--- furious.

Lousy customer service from Bell

Reviewed on Wednesday March 2, 2011 by , Owen Sound, Ont.
I usually don't write reviews, but my patience with Bell is long, long overdue. It has the worst customer service record of any company I have ever dealt with. I've had the U998 mobile stick for over 15 months and have had all of the problems that are mentioned below. Stick won't connect; stick does connect but then mysteriously disconnects; stick overheats. It has been a constant source of frustration for me, but I have no other option for internet connectivity. But now I hear that the "turbo hub" that is out might solve my problems. I've heard this before. I called Bell to ask about and upgrade and they tell me that I "am not eligible for an upgrade until four months after my current two year contract expires". When I have tried to point out how ridiculous this sounds, all I get is that that is their policy. Finally in desperation I asked to speak to a supervisor (the people you talk to when you call are reading from a script and have no authority to do anything). I was promised a call back in 48 to 72 hours. The call never came. after a week or so I called again to complain about not getting called back and talked with a very nice man who essentially listened to my entire story again, apologized profusely, but did nothing. He suggested that when my contract was up I should just go sign a new contract for a Turbo hub. DUH! I said that is exactly what I would be doing, but the new contract wouldn't be with Bell. Don't they want to keep their customers? It is unbelievable what I go through with that company. I wish there was a lower rating than one star.

Bell Novatel U998 Turbo Stick Not Connecting

Reviewed on Wednesday February 23, 2011 by , Cambridge
A quick word to all of you following this thread. I just spoke with a Bell Tech colleague who informed me that both the SIM cards ending in 009 and 007 are unstable on the Bell network and thus will constantly disconnect(or not connect at all). The resolution is to take the SIM card(and Turbo Stick) into a Bell store and have the instore reps replace it. All stores and contact centre reps have this information in their knowledge database that they use when answering any incoming calls from customers. End of problem. And for the guy who was 'brilliant' enough to use icecubes on his Turbo Stick - great way to void a warranty by putting your your equipment directly in contact with frozen water(further referred to in the electronics world as 'direct moisture"). I also heard that if you put the Turbo Stick on train tracks to be run over, the condensed metal would give you better reception - why don't you try that too? Geez....

U998 Mobile Connect is a joke !!!

Reviewed on Friday February 11, 2011 by , Trenton
U998 does not work . Continual disconnects. I followed the advice of the person here mentioning the ice cubes to cool the stick to no avail. Continual disconnects. Seems to function with smaller file downloads however the larger ones always fail, and I get disconnected. Also downloaded updates which were supposedly the remedy for disconnects to no avail.

To say this was a frustrating experience would be a huge understatement.

Bell needs to start being accountable if they are going to sell junk to their clients. Shame on them!

Disgraceful Product knowledge and Bell Service

Reviewed on Thursday February 10, 2011 by , Milton Ont
Purchased U998 Turbo Stick last Jan. Haven't used it too much but lately every time we did it stopped working like many of the previous comments written. We finally took it back to the Bell store and were told that the warranty had run out as of Jan 14,2011. We have a 3 year contract. They informed us that it could be sent out for repair at our expense and we could have a loaner - again at our expense. Not being satisfied with this we went home to make some phone calls to Bell. We waited and waited on the line and never did speak to anyone finally hanging up. This is when we found this review. Our Sim card # ended in 007 and thanks to another reviewers information this card needed to be replaced free of charge by Bell. We called the store back and they seemed to recall something of this nature. We returned the following day to speak with the store manager and presented him with the info we had come across. He said at first he was unaware of any problems and had not seen any poor reviews. Off he went to the back room and returned with a new Sim card for us - no more questions. He must have had an epiphany in there or something stating "yes, I seem to recall some problems with these" We left leaving him with the pages of reviews we printed off so he could now be informed. Amazing how the product knowledge flows when they're selling you something!

another unhappy U998 customer

Reviewed on Monday February 7, 2011 by , Calgary
Well, nothing too much to add to the rest of the clan above/below me. We are almost a year into our 2 year contract, luckily I only went with the $35/month version. I told Bell I didn't want to pay for the months since August 2010 my U998 stopped working. I finally got the courage to visit the local kiosk about my difunctional stick. But that didn't work b/c they didn't know how to look up my acccount number as I didn't know my U998's phone number.....I had to can't look up my last name?? So back the next day. They switched out my sim card, downloaded the firmware. no change. Then my wife decided to strap 2 chunks of ice in a zip-loc to it and disconnects. So then I call Bell and say wtf, my U998 only works with ice strapped to it, it overheats and dies, the tech guy says ok, bring it in to a kiosk and we'll replace it. So a week later I take it to the kioska again and say I have this tech ticket number to replace this......the guy at the kiosk just looks at me dumbfounded for 10 seconds and says "we can't do that" and "I don't know what you mean, we don't know how to do that" a call is dialed to head office, he has a long conversation with the chick he's talking to b/c of course he is paid to be stupid and then I have and even longer one with her. She then decides to be nice and feels so bad and sends me a new one. But it is on back order.....ok, ok, whatever but I HAVE to send mine back to purolator WITHIN 5 business days or ELSE. And she says if there is any water damage I have to pay for it.....I said 'well its the only way I could make it work' response. So I just recently get my new plastic wrapped U998 and guess what>>>>>>it doesn't does work with ice wrapped around it though. I'm game for a class action, whatever we have to do to protect others from the crappy contracts with products that are NFG!! I'm done with BELL

You should complain right up to the highest manager and tell them you will take this to the Better Business Bureau. $70/month is already ridiculous while $500 is simply robbery. You should demand your money back. Record every rep's name and ID. Even all the managers. Next write a letter to the president and say you will keep writing and telling everyone until you have been fully refunded. This is what I would do.

Turbo Stick is a money grabbing scam

Reviewed on Thursday February 3, 2011 by , Calgary Alberta
I Purchased the Bell turbo Stick in May 2010 from a local bell store. The rep I spoke to Guarenteed that the most I would ever pay per month would be $70.00. He said that would be excessive and my Bill would most likely be $35.00 per month, so I decided to cancel my current internet provider and signed a 2 year contract with Bell. On a side note I have been a happy bell customer up until this point for 5 plus years.

My Monthly Charge for the first few months was $65.00. I was not overly pleased by this as I had been assured that my bill would most likely be $35.00 and we really didn't use the stick for much more than checking our email, but it wasn't that big of a concern for me so I let it slide.

In November Bell stopped sending me by bill through the mail, I had not signed up for paperless so I called them and asked them to please send it via mail. They apolgized and said they would right away and I paid the same amount that I had in October thinking there wouldn't be much difference. December came and still no Bill, so again I paid the amount I had been paying for the last 7 months. January 2011 came and I still had not recieved any bill so I decided to get set up online.

When I recieved my online Bill I was $1000.00 over due. After spending 2 hours on the phone with customer service they informed me that $960.00 of the charges was from November, Decmeber and January internet usage from the Turbo Stick. They were now charging me approximatly $360.00 a month for the Turbo Stick. When I asked the customer service rep how that could happen she informed me this was common and that you could spend up to $500.00 per month before Bell would cut you off.

I have no Idea why the usage sky rocketed all of the sudden in November, as our time on the computer and lifestyle has not changed. I am wondering if this has happened to anyone else?

For all those stuck on a 1 or 2 year contract, you need to call Bell and request (no, DEMAND) to talk to Customer Relations. That department has the power to waive some of your fees, reimburse a couple of months, etc., if you show that you have been experiencing problems with this device since you bought it. If you called Technical Solutions, all of your calls have been recorded in two places: in a Memo on your account, and in their Heat Ticket System. If you called, reported the problem, and still got no solution, bring your case to Customer Relations and get some kind of financial compensation. It's only fair.

I feel like such a sucker. A guy at the Source talked me into getting this Turbostick (which is very non-turbo-like) because I would get $100 off of the laptop I wanted to buy. He assured me that it was quick, easy and awesome and sold me the flexi-plan. I am downtown in a major Canadian city and I barely get more than low signal strength. I called and the very polite and lovely tech people (I am not being sarcastic they were very nice) tried to help telling me to reinstall another program, change my sim card, etc. I spoke to them on three occasions and nothing worked. They then blamed the low signal strength and the stick disconnecting when it felt like it on my building in the end. I live in a duplex on the first floor. And I set up my laptop right beside the window. My Fido cell works fine! Full strength 100% of the time. But for some reason this Turbostick gets nothing but a low signal. It is painful to even check my email. I am now stuck on this stupid two year contract and I want out! But I can't get out! It is so frustrating. I wish I did my research first and read these posts because I would have never opted for this silly stick. So for any of those individuals who are interested in the Turbostick. Stay away!

U998 Nightmare solution

Reviewed on Saturday October 2, 2010 by , Halifax. N.S.
After purchasing this turbo stick from BELL telephone I have had 7 months of problems. Bear in mind if you own or contract this item you are dealing with your service provider and Novatel the maker of the stick.
If you have problems ( in my case BELL ), you will have to spend hours on the phone with their tech dept and you will probably not get the answer you need.
After numerous software and firmware updates ( one of which crashed my PC Notebook) I discovered from a BELL tech employee that there are, quote, " Lemon sim cards ". These cards have serial numbers ending in 007. They MUST be replaced at your Bell store ( Free of charge).

I now run this stick on my HP notebook and my Mac Book.

So if you have problems do the following:

1: Check your (BELL Sim card serial number if it ends in 007 REPLACE it.

2: Up Date software and firmware ( Novatel have all theses downloads available).

These companies ( in particular BELL ) need to solve these issues together and let the consumer know what the issues are but as usual they take their fees and we the consumer spend hours doing their jobs.

Good Luck.

Started out with the U760 stick which was fairly dependable. Then got the big upgrade letter for the U998 which is 3 times faster with 2 free months of unlimited access. What a joke. The upgrade was supposed to be free but I was charged $35 which I fought to get a credit for. The Bell store where I got it was unaware of the offer letter so I gave them a copy. Figured the unlimited access would start at my next billing cycle, Wrong. First bill had major overage charges. Fought to get a credit for these. Hassles galore. Had to sign 2 yr contract to get stick for $0.
The stick was doing random disconnects so I called for fix. Told to download new firmware and latest version of connect program, Did so and then couldn't get stick to run. Spent 2 hours on phone without success, couldn't find drivers. Tech said "will have to escalate problem, will get back to you. NEVER DID.
got it to work myself after 2 hours but performance is unreliable with freezeups and disconnects. Decided to get the latest version of connect program so downloaded to usb stick from Bell site.
This "up to 21 mbs" device donloaded at average speed of 36 KBS to my usb device. What a joke.

So now I'm limping along, swithching usb ports or rebooting to get it to work.

Checked out the Turbo Hub device and seems its been working well. Rate plans are much better than stick. No way you can change devices without ig penalty from Bell.

How can they get away with such a poor device and support and keep you locked in to a contract. Is there any one or where You can appeal to. At least there are "Lemon Laws and arbitration for cars. Would the CRTC have anyone to listen to complaints?? Maybe we need a "boycot Bell" site.

Firmware Upgrade

If you're thinking of buying the U998 based on the advertised 21 Mbps; I have three words

>>>DON'T DO IT<<<.

I've had the device for 6 months and experienced pretty much everything that the other reviewers have mentioned. Such as the unit working good for 2 weeks then needing to be reset constantly.

I put a watchdog device on it that would automatically reset the device each time it died. The times between resets got shorter and shorter until I returned it for a new one. The new one started good and slowly got to the point of being unusable within a couple months.

Returned device again and achieved speeds of 3.5Mbps. Performed the firmware upgrade and now the U998 is more reliable but only averages 2.5Mbps download speed. I was able to get low res video at 400Kbps to run buffer free but 1Mbps was out of the question.

Bottom line is that the firmware drops the device down to EVDO and should not be sold as an HSPA device.

When the computer reads it, unplug it and then immediately plug the Bell Turbo stick back into the slop the flashdrive was in. The computer will then identify the network and you will be able to connect immediately.

We were on dialup before, live in a rural area so thought this stick would be great, at first I couldn't connect then my son (no help from Bell) told me to hang the stick in the window, it has worked great ever since. My biggest beef is how fast I use up 500mb, I hardly go on any sites, just check my e-mail, I am so upset that I am in a 3 year contract, so stuck now. I complained about dialup for years but it was unlimited. I could put up with the slow speeds. Anyone know how to get out of a contract legally?

I have purchase on the 22 of july this stick, thinking it was the best new invention since slice bread...

Well it work well for 10-15 minutes then stop!

At first I check all my setting, review my system,(I am on windows 7 Ultimate, nothing wrong evrey other USB devices work perfectly.

So I downloaded their Firmware upgrade etc. Nothing, well Ok, I bring it back to Bell. They say they cannot take it back because I have more then 50Mg of data downloaded, 103 Mb to be exact, well the dam upgarde is 45 Mb by itself, so plus the surfing to the page voila!!

So by actually making sure the Dam thing is up to the lates Firmware and Mobile Connect from Bell, you are automaticly over the limit.

It is a shamefull scam from Bell Canada.

I try to explain that to the Customer service, they told me it's not their fault...

The store wants to take a look at my laptop, the salesman,(about 20 years old), told me "Hey I have two degree in computer and 3 years experience, maybe you don't know what you are doing... Well I am the Service Desk manager at my firm, with over 18 years experience in IT, I told him.

Doesn't mean you know anything he responded me...

So now they want me to send it to repair, but I will be charge in the meantime, hey I sign a contract...

I even told them I would exchage it for an I phone 4, full pacgage and that they would make more monney with me, to no avail..

They are the worst company I have nec=ver did business with..

Stay away from the dam stick and specially Bell...

I purchased the U998 Turbo stick in April 2010 and for the first 2 weeks worked great. I'm in a rural area and have very limited high speed options so I was excited with this. However after 2 weeks the stick overheated. The bell store gave me a new stick and sim card and it worked well again for about 2 weeks. I've chatted with people in my neighbourhood and they are all having the same problems.

As for billing, signed a 3 year contract that waived the connection fee with the purchase of the warranty. It has now been 3.5 months and I am still reminding and awaiting a credit for the connection fee and also awaiting a replacement stick which has stopped working for the 3rd time. I have no other issues using USB devices except for the U998 Turbo Stick.

Customer service from Bell Mobility is the worst I've ever experienced. The help desk just want's to pass the buck and blame everything else.

I totally regret getting this product.

I'm in a rural area and have limited providers with highspeed. I thought I would try this and for the first 2 weeks it worked better than the other options I have even on a very low connection. After 2 weeks though the problems started. The stick only connects for short periods of time (10-15 min) and the 310-surf tech support offered no solutions to resolve this other than go back to the store. I exchanged it for a new stick and it worked well for another few weeks. All of my other USB devices work well and have no issues, just the turbo stick.

It seems that as more customers join the issue is becoming increasing worse so I believe that there is a problem sharing the signal in our area.

I find it very coincidential that the grace period is 15 days, basically the time that the stick works and then forces a $400 fee to disconnect from the contract.

The disconnection issue happens so often that I am always reloading pages and causing me to be over the limit and always paying the maximum for the month.

This is not the service that I was told that I could expect, not even close. Bell lies to you to get you to sign and then just runs from their obligations.

i signed up for 2 years , really wish i hadn't. the bill for the monthly user charges, always arrives on time , but that's the only thing that works , the stick simply doesn't do what its supposed to., it always cuts out at the most inconvenient moment.
we are in a strong signaal area, sometimes i get 45 bars sometimes 1 .
i have installed upgrades, as directed by tech support , still not working properly,, there is another upgrade i'm supposed to install but the stick doesn't work well enough to install it.
this is the worst part. by some stroke of luck, i had saved the novatel download. the tech told me that if i hadnt, the stick could not be repaired . thats right , because their product is so useless, my computer would be unable to connect to the internet . i have spent many hours trying to get the thing to work properly, and i'm really really disgusted with it .@$90.00 a month for 5 gs , it should at least work all the time . beware of this product , not only is it useless, it may just destroy your computer .
i had to give it one star, to get this review to be accepted , but i wouldn't even give it 1 star .
having written this review , i have my fingers crossed that the stick will manage to send it.

Not worth it!

I got this stick because the area that I live in does not get fast enough internet. I had talked to the Bell people at the store, and not only did they give wrong information, but it cost me $200! I was told that the maximum you would pay a month is $70, but that is not true! In less than a month I had racked up a $350 bill, because I had watched youtube and online shows. No one had properly trained me on how to monitor my internet usage. Bell did credit me and my bill was dropped to a $100. Then I stopped using it, and I was then charged $35 for the next month, even though I am not on a contract! The people at the Bell store had promised me that I would not be charged for not using it. So I cancelled my stick officially, but Bell will still charge me for a month's fee of $35 because "it will take one month to cancel". Bell is just a money grab! Really, I have to pay for an extra month even thought I cancelled it?
The point is that although the stick is great, before you know it you have spent way too much on internet. Basically you can check your mail, but no youtube, or watching tv. Not practical at all. And Bell is a waste of time.

Bell called, asked if I wanted to upgrade from the U760 I have to the U998, free for two weeks, no cost, no obligation.
Received the U998 by mail and had to call to activate. Took 4 hours and 5 calls to do this and I was told there was a $35 charge. I complained, they waived the charge.
Speed was no faster then my U760.
I reinstalled my U760, because I didn't want a new 1 year contract, and the U998 didn't work any better. Called Bell. Was told I had to go to a Bell store to reactivate.
The person at the Bell store said I could have reactivated my U760 over the phone. She phoned Bell and was on hold for about 20 minutes but did reactivate my old turbo stick.
The U998 might work well in some areas. The challenge it seams is that Bell customer service has very limited product knowledge.
If you have lots of time and patience, this is the produce for you.

I bought the Novatel 998 because I was fed up with satellite Internet from Hughes because of its poor speed, high latency (ping time) and daily download limits.
I originally had the stick in an external router so that the connection could be shared by several computers. It worked well, with download speeds of about 4 mb. Very often, however, it would disconnect.
I eventually found that the problem was originating in the stick, not the router. I had the stick replaced, (a fair bit of grief convincing Bell that it was defective) and now the disconnect problem no longer exists.
In the meantime, the router has failed, so I am using the stick directtly into the laptop, and am getting phenominal download speeds of 9 mb, sometimes as high as 18 mb.
I have recommended it to many people. Several have gone ahead and purchased the device, but many of them are unhappy with low speeds, and frequent disconnects. None of them seem to get the good results I am achieving.

Waited three weeks to get the stick back, then got a huge bill from Bell for overage. Was told I couldn't do anything but pay the bill and stay in the contract since I was over the waiting period. It was the SIM Card

Reviewed on Wednesday March 3, 2010 by , Calgary
This is the follow up my previous review about Windows 7 and Windows XP, no luck. I just wanted to post a sequal so you know what to do.

In my case, after calling support during a normal business day, (hint: never call support on a weekend as they will just follow a script), it was decided that the issue was most likely the SIM card. I was adviced to take it back to the Bell store and get it replaced. So, I did.

At the Bell store (Westbrook mall, Calgary), the Sales Rep took it upon himself to fix the issue right there. After trying to download and install the latest driver, changing the Turbostick with no luck, he realized that in the end, the SIM card was faulty. As soon as a new card was installed, the purple light came on!

I have been using it for day or so already, and it is indeed quite fast (much faster than my previous P720).

Although, there should not be any issue to start with, I wanted to give a bit of credit back to Bell to resolve this issue.

So, if you can't connect. Get a new SIM card. It is best to bring your laptop to the store and do not leave until it is working for you. Do not bother with support online - they just follow a script. Bring the laptop late in the day so they can work on the issue with no pressure to attend other customers.

If you are in Calgary, go to the Bell store in Westbrook Mall and ask to for Amro - he is quite technical and won't leave you hanging.

Tried in Windows 7 and XP. No luck

I used to have a Novatel P720 (PCMCIA card) for 2 years with no problems other than it was slow. I bought a new laptop and decided to upgrade to this U998. I got it from the Bell store and they were able to just renew my contract with no extra fees. Right at the store, I tried connecting for the first time and no luck. Tech support at the store was not great but I still wanted to "believe" so I said that I was going to tech support 1877 number. Their tech support was just going thru the support script and after 45 mins on the phone, he said that he had scalate this issue to the "engineering" department as he could not figure it out!

I need to wait now until mon or tue for their call!

So, kudos for how easy was to get the upgraded version, too bad it still does not work - yet!

In hindsight, I should just returned the stick thing at the Bell store! If they themselves can't figure it out, how would I?

Give back my P720!

I live in an area where DSL is not available and decided to give the u998 a try. When first installed it worked just fine (it was pretty fast). When I shut down my computer and removed it and started it back up again later it showed that there was no WiFi network and could not detect the device. I thought that there may be a corrupted file so I unistalled it and reinstalled it and again it worked just fine. I have found that I also can go to the drive under my computer and click on the drive and click install/repair and it works just as well as unistalling the software and reinstalling it. I have read all of the other reviews and am a little concerned about my first bill. Thankfully I am not on any contract so that if I find using it unbearable or the stick fails in some way I can discontinue use.

The Turbo Stick & Bell Service

Reviewed on Saturday January 2, 2010 by , Wasaga Beach, ON
I purchased the Turbo Stick because there is NO Hi speed DSL available for this area. Plugged it in and in less then 10 min I was surfing, great! The very next day they sent me my first e-bill for 1 months service over $80.00. Not Impressed. My wife has her own PC so I installed on her machine all worked great but I was getting a little concerned about what the next bill would be.
We shared the stick, I had it during the day, she had it all evening. Got a new PC with Windows 7, installed it and all was great. Got the 2nd months bill and it was near $65.00, That was OK with me, next day it would not connect. Tried it on all 3 PC's. Spent 2 Hrs talking to Tech Support, NO Joy. They said uninstall and then re-install, did that, and it would not load the drivers. I gave up and went to the Bell Store. They said we'll replace the stick, but we have to mail it to you as it is a warranty replacment. I said what do I do for internet service while waiting for Canada Post to deliver it? Sorry, but this is company policy. OK how about a dial up service, OK yes we can get you that information but you'll need to set up a contract with them. I said I just want it for a few days, sorry, but you have to purchase this service. I am not a happy camper at this point and I'm getting close to shooting the messenger. I grudginly accept and go home. Decide I'll try this stick one last time, SURPRISE, it works. However still can't load the Driver for one computer, and can't locate where to find it.

The service from Bell is pretty awful. If your stick fails, tough luck. If you use it for business, there is NO OPTIONS, can't even buy extra or extended warranty, No Replacement from the store, you have to wait for it to come via snail mail. Worse still, if you have a notebook and you travel outside of Canada, your really out of luck.

I am desperately looking for another type of service, other then Bell. Bell will leave you stranded!

I had used the Rogers Rocket stick for almost 12 months, when the signal got lost in our area. After 10 days Rogers still had not fixed it. I replaced with Bell U998 (4 weeks ago) with excellent results - much better speeds. This is the only way we can get broadband Internet so we are prepared to put up with a few glitches:
Usually get 2 bars signal strength.
Usually HSPA but often UMTS.
Modem shifts often from one band to the other.
Irony is that Bell had just launched HSPA+ in our area but we never receive on this band consistently.
Modem regularly won't connect or disconnect and rebooting seems only way to fix.
Bell dealer tried to hit us with $35 connection fee in addition to Bell Mobility. They have agreed to refund this.
We did have to take a 2 year contract and pay $75 to get the modem.
Hope it is still working in 6 months.
