Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus announced invites became available Nov. 19 for the OnePlus X, its newest budget phone.

The company made the announcement via Twitter. The exclusive release, by invite only, has drawn criticism from reviewers like TechRadar's James Peckham, who wrote (Nov. 17): "The big problem here is the same as with everything that comes from OnePlus you can't just walk into a shop and buy one. To get a OnePlus X you have to grab an invite off a friend, from the internet or through a competition. It's not particularly simple."

The OnePlus X is hard for most consumers to buy, and beyond that, its LTE support is questionable.

The big draw for the OnePlus X is its price tag ($250 USD or roughly $333 CAD). "The OnePlus X is an impressive little phone (with a) sharp display, premium design, and clean software," wrote The Verge's Dan Seifert (Nov. 12). "For the price, the OnePlus X seems pretty hard to beat."

The "seems" part is a caveat -- Seifert advises U.S. consumers not to buy the device because it lacks proper LTE support for AT&T and T-Mobile networks. It also doesn't work at all on Verizon or Sprint's networks. "If you're in Canada or Europe, the OnePlus X should get an LTE signal on most carriers... provided you can navigate OnePlus' arcane invite system and actually purchase one."

So yeah, it's a good value device if a) you manage to buy one and b) you can get an LTE signal with it where you live.
