British Columbia received a new area code on Saturday, June 1. The 236 area code will be introduced slowly across the province, and will only be given out in areas where there is no longer a sufficient supply of existing area codes - 604, 250 and 778. There's no way to tell where the new code will pop up first, as each geographic area has a different supply of numbers within existing area codes.
There will be no change to existing numbers, nor special service numbers (211, 311, 411, 611 and 911), but if you're signing up for a new service, you may be offered the 236 number.
Expect to see new area codes being introduced in the upcoming months in several other regions throughout Canada, as the increasing demand for telephone numbers, particularly for wireless devices, has created a need for additional numbers across the country.
