Roaming in Canada

Fido's digital network covers major urban areas and some frequently- travelled highway corridors.

You now have the possibility of adding the Expanded Network option to your Fido monthly package for $5 per month. With this option, you have access to the full Fido's Expanded Network outside Fido's digital coverage area. Any minutes you use on the expanded network will count toward your Fido monthly package.

Calling Charges

When you place or receive a call outside of your local calling area, while travelling in Canada on the Fido network, you are charged for airtime and long-distance - you are not charged for roaming because you are still on the Fido network*.

* If traveling to an area in Canada where there is no Fido coverage (such as Dryden, Ontario or the North West Territories), roaming charges will apply as you will be connected to the network of a partner wireless carrier.

Roaming in the United States

From Manhattan to Monterey and from Seattle to South Beach, Fido follows you everywhere in the continental U.S., plus Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, at a most competitive rate.

Automatic access to U.S. roaming with any Fido monthly airtime package.
Data transmission and mobile Internet (WAP) access via GPRS.
All handsets sold by Fido work on our U.S. roaming partners' networks (additional GSM 850 MHz coverage in the U.S. is accessible only if you have a handset that includes the 850 MHz band).

For business or frequent travelers to the U.S. - instead of paying a standard per minute rate for each minute of usage, you pay in advance for an allotment of minutes and save up to 67% off the standard per minute rate! Roaming add-ons must be kept on your account for a minimum of 3 months.

Notes:
All calls made or received in the U.S. are billed on a per-minute basis.
Some calls may appear on your invoice up to 120 days after they were made.
When calling a toll-free number, airtime charges apply and long-distance charges may apply.
Local airtime and long distance continue to be free of charge for Fido customers calling Fido Customer Service while roaming.

International Roaming

Fido offers the most extensive international coverage available, thanks to our international roaming agreements with more than 500 roaming partners in over 200 countries and areas around the world.

For most countries, you'll need a handset that works on different frequency bands than in Canada. Click here for a list of Fido handsets that will work overseas.

Before setting out: while roaming abroad you will be able to place calls to North America, as well as calls within the country where you are roaming. Also, you will be able to receive calls from Canada. If while roaming you plan to place an international call anywhere in the world outside North America while roaming, you will need to call 611, free of charge, from your Fido or 1 888 481-FIDO (3436) to validate your eligibility. Some conditions and an activation delay apply.

Satellite Roaming

Satellite roaming provides virtually 100% outdoor coverage in remote areas, in countries where there is little or no GSM coverage and on the open sea. Fido’s roaming partner, Thuraya Satellite, provides coverage in Europe, North and Central Africa, Central Asia, the Middle East and India.

To be able to phone via the satellite network, you require a Fido SIM card and a rental handset available through Cellhire.

International Voice Travel packs & Voice Roaming add-ons

International Voice Travel Packs - One time purchase fee
For the occasional international traveler

Purchasing a Travel Pack makes using your phone while traveling more affordable than ever saving you up to 61 % off standard Fido voice roaming rates.

With a Travel Pack, you make a one-time purchase (non-recurring) of voice travel minutes that you can use to make/receive calls from your roaming destination to/from anywhere in the world good for one month from the date of purchase. If you run out of travel minutes, just keep on talking because your rate per minute continues at the same low rate as the stated per minute rate of your Travel Pack until your one month is up. Then simply buy another pack. Remember to add one to your voice plan before you leave!

With a Travel Pack, you make a one-time fee of text messages that you can use to send a text message to anywhere in the world while roaming, good for one month from the date of purchase. If you run out of travel text messages, you can keep on sending messages at the reduced rate provided by your Travel Pack until your one month is up. Remember to add one to your voice plan before you leave!

The rate for sending additional international text messages from Canada beyond what is included in the international text messaging options is 25¢ per message sent.
